We have all heard about it in the news, but what is Bisphenol A, or BPA? BPA is often found in polycarbonate plastics that are used for food and drink packaging as well as many other items like compact discs, impact-resistant safety equipment, and medical devices. In addition, BPA is also used in epoxy resins that coat metal products such as food cans, bottle tops, and water supply pipes.
A new study has shown that exposing developing tissue to low levels of BPA, or Bisphenol A, is linked to a higher risk of prostate cancer in tissue grown from human prostate stem cells. These results were presented on Monday, June 17th at the Endocrine Society’s 95 Annual Meeting in San Francisco, California.
In this study, investigators used human stem cells to grow prostate tissue in a mouse model. Their findings showed that early exposure to BPA increased the risk of prostate cancer and a precancerous condition known as epithelial neoplasia, or PIN. The results suggest that BPA directly targets stem cells directly which may also explain the long lasting effects of BPA on the human body.
